The Flåm Railway is one of the world’s most scenic train journeys and “holds the title of ‘the world’s steepest railway.'” As the train climbs from sea level to 867 meters (2,844 feet), you’ll pass by cascading waterfalls, dramatic mountain cliffs, and lush valleys.
This engineering marvel is a must for anyone visiting Flåm. Be sure to bring your best camera!

If you need an easy way to return to Flåm, take the shuttle bus between Flåm and Gudvangen.

Take a scenic drive to visit the Borgund Stave Church, one of Norway’s best-preserved medieval churches. Or stroll the charming streets of Lærdalsøyri, a historic village filled with 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses.
Both towns are easily accessible via rental car and add even more history and culture to your Norwegian experience!
I recommend exploring the scenic mountain road from Flåm to Lærdalsøyri during the summer—or making the circular trip from Gamle Lærdalsøyri to Aurlandsvangen for a fjord-to-mountain route.
Any time of year, you can drive through the Lærdal Tunnel, the world’s longest car tunnel.
