Travel your way: An overview of the Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour
The Sognefjord is a true Norwegian hidden gem, but you don’t have to wait until your tour takes off to explore the Sognefjord! Start your journey with my complete Sognefjord guide.
The Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour connects the main cities of Oslo and Bergen with awe-inspiring fjord views along the way.
Travelers say this is an easy and comfortable journey where you’ll enjoy delicious Norwegian food, unique cultural experiences and unforgettable activities.
The tour is self-guided, so it’s the perfect option for those who want to keep at their own pace while prioritizing their must-visit spots.
*Important ticket info* Tickets for the Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour are sold as one package for transportation only. You can book your hotel stay and activities when purchasing your tour, but these are extra.
Many travelers do the tour as a day trip out of Bergen in the summer (April – October) or Oslo year-round with one or more nights in Balestrand (more on that later!). The tour is also a great option for travelers who need a comfortable and seamless journey between Bergen and Oslo or vice versa.
The Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour is a unique thing to do in Norway in the winter (November – March). Keep in mind the tour follows a different route then. Instead of a stop in Balestrand, you’ll land in Sogndal, another idyllic town hosting traditional Christmas markets and events.
What to expect: Your Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour
You’re about to embark on a scenic journey through Norway’s unique and photo-worthy landscapes. Get a taste of what’s to come for your Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour with my YouTube episode, BEST Fjord Tour from Bergen or Oslo? Sognefjord in a Nutshell.
Your tour starts with a scenic train ride from Oslo, which includes assigned seats. In Bergen, you’ll start with a ferry ride. Unlike the train in Oslo, the ferry has open seating, so it’s wise to arrive at least 30 – 40 minutes early to get a seat with the best view! No matter your departure point, you’ll enjoy a relaxing and picturesque journey through the Sognefjord.
The ferry has modern amenities, like electric outlets for charging your phone or camera batteries, so you don’t have to worry about missing once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities! You’ll love the fjord views from the large, panoramic windows on board. There’s also the option to stand on the deck to soak up the Norwegian sunshine and get an unobstructed view of the towering cliffs and lush greenery.
Don’t forget to stop by the small but well-stocked café to enjoy a ferry coffee and buttermilk pancake (svele) with butter and brown cheese. Yum!
Explore one of the optional stops along the journey to see more of Norway’s incredible sights, which can include the scenic towns of Balestrand and Flåm.
You can create a one-day or multi-day experience by adding hotel stays and activities. Book your hotel and activities when buying your Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour ticket. You can also buy them separately after booking your tour (see my hotel recommendations below if you’re going with this option).
Places to stay in Balestrand: The heart of the fjord
You’ve made it to Balestrand, where there are plenty of opportunities to immerse in Norwegian culture. The pace of life in this idyllic town is gentle, and it’s the perfect place to unwind and sip a fresh Sognefjord fruit juice.
You’ll find that Balestrand is easy to navigate, so you can take your time exploring the historic architecture, quaint shops and small exhibitions. For extra adventure, check out a kayaking or thrilling RIB boat tour (linked below!).
After a full day of travel and sightseeing, nothing will feel better than a cozy place to rest and rejuvenate. I have two recommendations for you!
- Kviknes Hotel: My favorite! The Kviknes Hotel is an 18th-century gem with a rich history and warm hospitality. A stay at Kviknes is an unforgettable experience! The hotel is perfect for travelers seeking luxury against the backdrop of Norway’s natural beauty. Enjoy a delicious buffet, which includes locally sourced ingredients—and don’t miss the impressive 12-page wine menu and local beer selection!
- Balestrand Hotel: A great alternative to Kviknes! The Balestrand Hotel is a quaint family-run accommodation neighboring the Kviknes Hotel. Guests enjoy the large garden area, private beach and stunning panoramic fjord views.
Things to do in Balestrand
You won’t get bored in Balestrand! Walking through this fjord gem, you’ll see traditional wooden homes, local orchards, and family-run cider farms. If you’re interested in exploring the local Viking history, there are plenty of relics to discover, like St. Olaf’s church and old burial mounds.
Locally-produced Cider and Lunch
Balestrand grows abundant fruit trees thanks to the region’s unique climate and rich orchard tradition. Many generations of families have cultivated the town’s thriving hard cider scene, like Gard’s family, who planted their first apple tree in 1922.
Don’t miss a stop at Gard’s cidery, Ciderhuset, where you’ll taste a variety of local ciders, including non-alcoholic options. Ciderhuset also offers a delectable farm-to-table menu.
RIB Boat Tour to Finnabotn
Imagine landing in a small, roadless village with no cell service and no noise pollution… the only sound you hear is the rush of a pristine waterfall. This is Finnabotn, a remote gem located in the most hidden arm of the Sognefjord.
The perfect experience for nature lovers, the RIB boat tour takes you through the fjord and into Finnabotn. There are unique stops along the way, like Kvamsøy Island, home to a 13th-century medieval church.
The Sogneford in a Nutshell tour does not go into the Nærøyfjord like the Norway in a Nutshell Tour. If you want a similar experience, the RIB boat tour to Finnabotn is the way to go.
Fjord and Glacier Tour
Get close to the Bøyabreen Glacier with an unforgettable sightseeing boat tour. You’ll see abundant wildlife with more than 100 bird species!
One of the tour’s stops is The Norwegian Glacier Museum, an interactive museum featuring glacier and climate exhibitions.
Sogneford in a Nutshell Tour: Winter vs. Summer Itineraries
No matter which season you embark on your Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour, you’re guaranteed beautiful views and the journey of a lifetime! Keep in mind, though, that the activities you do will vary from season to season.
Things to do in Norway in the summer
During the summer (April – October), soak up the sun by the water, hike and enjoy a refreshing cider at Ciderhuset.
The Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour’s summer route includes more outdoor activities and a bustling atmosphere in Balestrand.
Things to do in Norway in the winter
The winter (November – March) offers a quieter yet still unique experience.
From snowshoe hiking to taking a dip in the fjord’s waters after relaxing in the sauna, there’s plenty of adventure in the winter months. You’ll also get to see one-of-a-kind frozen waterfalls and wintry forests.

Planning your Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour
It’s best to book your tour in advance for summer tours since it’s high season, which means hotels, activities and ferries can book up quickly.
You may not have to book as early during the winter, but it’s still wise if you have must-do items on your list, like a stay at the Kviknes Hotel. Many hotels have limited availability, and booking your stay early is your best bet to get the room and experience you’re after.
Don’t let a sudden drop in temperature ruin your trip! The weather can change rapidly in Norway, so make sure you’ve packed the right essentials depending on the season. Get my top Norway packing tips so you’re ready for any weather, any time of year!
Whether you depart from Oslo or Bergen, I recommend two hotels near the train stations:
- Hotel Norge by Scandic in Bergen (10-minute walk from the station)
- Thon Hotel Opera in Oslo (3-minute walk from the station)
Is Sognefjord worth visiting?
The Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour makes visiting the epic Sognefjord fjord easy. This iconic fjord is one of 1,700 in Norway—and one of the most popular. The Sognefjord is home to the biggest glacier in Norway and the highest mountains in Northern Europe.
The tour is perfect for travelers who want to go at their own pace and plan a personalized experience. You get seamless connections between trains, ferries and buses, so you can relax and enjoy the journey all the way through.
The best part? Buying your ticket is easy. Book your tour directly through Fjord Tours, so you’re all set for an epic adventure!
Sit back and enjoy the fjord views
The Sognefjord in a Nutshell Tour is perfect for travelers who dream of visiting Norway’s iconic fjords up close. The tour offers a way to do a lot in a little time. You’ll even have room on your itinerary to visit other Norwegian gems, like Oslo, Bergen and Flåm.

Hey Pal,
I’m visiting in January and doing the Norway in a Nutshell DIY thanks to your guide! I have a couple of days in Bergen at the end of it. Can you do a day trip to Balestrand and back to Bergen? Would that just be booking the ferry both ways? Thanks in advance!
Faisal
Hi Faisal, yes you could do it as a daytrip, but to be honest that would be a lot of ferry in one day (8 hours total). You can book ferry tickets on http://www.norled.no
Hi Pal,
It is mentioned on the website that the season is from April till end of October, can I still book for February as it is not allowed yet on the website.
Hi Omar, you can book the Sognefjord in a Nutshell winter ticket here
