How to get to Åndalsnes, Norway
You can conveniently reach Åndalsnes year-round by train, plane, or tour. Plenty of options are available depending on your schedule and travel wish list!
Getting to Åndalsnes by train
If you want a relaxing journey with incredible views, I recommend traveling on the Dovre Line from Oslo to Dombås. At Dombås, you’ll switch to the Rauma Railway to complete your journey to Åndalsnes.
The Rauma Railway offers passengers large windows so you can fully immerse in the sprawling views of Norway’s unique landscape and attractions, like the Kyllingbru Bridge. Don’t forget to charge your camera batteries before you hop aboard!

Getting to Åndalsnes by plane
If you need to get to Åndalsnes quickly, you can fly into Ålesund. Ålesund Airport has many connections to Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and other larger cities.
When you land, you can easily take a bus from the airport to downtown Ålesund. From there, you’ll switch to a direct bus to Åndalsnes. Check Entur.no for the latest route schedule.
You can also rent a car to Åndalsnes, which is about 1.5 hours away from the airport. For car rental in Norway check out Booking.com for some of the best rates.
Getting to Åndalsnes by tour
Many travelers enjoy the ease of the nutshell tours, like the Geirangerjord in a Nutshell tour. This is the most convenient way to get to Åndalsnes from both Oslo and Bergen since the tour ticket includes all necessary transportation to get you there and back.
This scenic tour takes you on a journey through Western Norway. You’ll have the unique opportunity to visit world-famous sites like the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen Mountain Road, and the charming town of Ålesund.

Romsdalsegeen Ridge Hike
The Romsdalsegeen Ridge Hike is considered one of Norway’s most renowned hikes. You’ll get a great view of Romsadeln Valley and the Rauma River from the trails.
This hike can take up to eight hours and has an elevation gain of 970 meters (3,182 feet). Plan accordingly with the right hiking gear, food, and equipment—plus a fully charged camera, of course!
You can choose to do this hike on your own or with an experienced local guide.

Trollstigen Hike
For a thrilling journey on foot, explore the unique serpentine mountain road of Trollstigen. You’ll get impeccable views of cascading waterfalls, sprawling fjords, and lush valleys—the scenery is unbeatable!
Don’t miss the Trollstigen viewpoint, which sits on the edge of a cliff 200 meters (656 feet) above ground. The viewpoint overlooks the winding road below and offers unbeatable valley views.

The Rauma Railway
Experience some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery on The Raumabanen Railway, also known as The Rauma Railway. The journey takes just over an hour and a half, giving you plenty of time to relax while admiring the magnificent views. Experience a one-of-a-kind ride on The Romsaeln Gondola, a modern electric cable car that climbs 708 meters ( feet) above sea level. At the top, you’re rewarded with 360-degree views of Trollstigen’s picturesque valley, the Rauma River, and Åndalsnes.
For a more active option, try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) on the Istra River. You’ll enjoy spectacular scenery while paddling along the green river and its lush natural surroundings.

Who can say they’ve driven over the ocean? Yes, you read that right! “The road across the sea” is not to be missed! Drive across bridges that bend and curve artfully between islands and reefs.
Opened to the public in 1989, The Atlantic Ocean Road connects several islands to the mainland and is a true engineering marvel. It even won Norway’s Construction of the Century in 2005!

Sodalhuset
Enjoy a cozy café-style dining experience at Sodalhuset. Perfect for a quick lunch, indulge in freshly-made pizza, burgers, and Norway’s famous Kanelboller (Cinnamon Bun).
Eggen Restaurant
Eggen Restaurant is located 708 meters ( feet) above sea level and offers delicious coffee, pastries, and elevated Norwegian classics for lunch and dinner. To get to Eggen, you’ll take a 5-minute gondola ride up, which you can take back down—unless you choose to hike back to the harbor, where you’ll pass the Rampestrekn viewpoint.
Belle Vue Restaurant
Belle Vue Restaurant is ideal for an elegant dining experience in the historic Grand Hotel. The restaurant offers a curated selection of à la carte items from locally sourced ingredients.

Tips for planning your Åndalsnes adventure
The summer is the best time to visit Åndalsnes if you want to experience Norway’s variety of outdoor activities.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed pace with fewer crowds, plan to visit late in the spring or early fall.
No matter when you visit, be sure to pack waterproof layers, a good pair of hiking boots, and, of course, your favorite camera! Before you get all these in your suitcase, grab my curated Norway packing list with my recommended seasonal must-haves.
